Le Secret
Music: Gabriel Fauré
Poetry: Armand Sylvestre
The Secret
(Translation by Winifred Radford)
I want the morning to know nothing
Of the name that I spoke in the night,
And that in the dawn breeze, silently,
It may vanish like a tear that dries.
I want the day to proclaim
The love that I have hidden from the morning,
And leaning over my open heart
May set it alight like a grain of incense.
I want the sunset to forget
The secret I have told to the day,
And carry it away, along with my love,
In the folds of its pale dress!
