Prairie Sky on a Winter Night

Sparkling diamonds on a field of black look down;
sparkling diamonds on a field of white look back —
midnight, just past moonrise.

A silence beyond the lack of sound;
a silence as if the cold air can take sound away from us,
Or us away from sound.

The white snow, moonsilvered, shimmers in a microscopic dance;
the light from massive stars crosses distances measured in time
to be tickled by air, warped by wind.

And I stop in watchful wonder
between the black field and the white,
drawn to the dance of the diamonds,

In the only place in the universe
where the apparent sizes match.
