Teemings

One

by FairyChatMom

When you’re one
It doesn’t matter much
How you behave
Or amuse yourself
To pass the time of day.
When you’re one
No one notices
When you hum
Or giggle
Or scratch your ear.
You can lean on the wall
Press your nose to the window
Flick a lamp on and off
Slide across the polished floor.
No matter, really.
You can skip a bath one night
And stay up past three
Eating biscuits on the carpet
In the living room
Since no one notices.
No one can chide you
No one can nag you
Or bother you
When you’re one.
If you were two
You could talk
And dance
And tell silly jokes.
You could walk
And not be afraid
Of falling
If you were two.
But when you’re one
You try not to think
Of being two.
Maybe someday
You won’t be one.
Will that make you
Nothing
Or a part of more?
