I’m afraid this will be my last editorial for Teemings, and I wanted to take this opportunity to say goodbye to our loyal readers.
OK, so it’s not really “goodbye,” since the majority of you participate on the Straight Dope Message Board, and I’ll still see you there, but more “goodbye” as the editor, per se.
Luckily, we conned – um, I mean, convinced – Troy into helping out for this issue. Little did he know that he would soon be thrust into the heart of the Teemings machine. So please, take pity on him and continue to follow the rules of grammar as I pleaded for in my previous editorial.
I can hear the Teemings millions ask: Why must you leave, David?
Well, okay, maybe a couple of you are wondering.
The answer is that I simply do not have time. I kind of knew this when we began, but things have only gotten busier. Heck, you may have even noticed my reduced presence on the SDMB itself. (Don’t worry, though, my eyes are always watching Great Debates for any rule violations.) And after having written the most Staff Reports last year, I’ve been virtually invisible in that area this year.
Let me explain what I was trying to do while I was also supposed to be editing (or helping to edit) articles for this issue of Teemings.
First, of course, I have my day job. Plus I have a family, including two young boys. My oldest takes two nighttime classes – gymnastics and swimming. At the same time this ‘zine was due, I was also trying to write an article for a national specialty magazine, which includes contacting people to interview, collecting information, etc. I had to follow up with two other magazine editors regarding work I’d submitted earlier. I was trying to put together articles for the monthly newsletter of the Rational Examination Association of Lincoln Land – a local skeptics group of which I am the chairman. At the same time, we were looking for a meeting topic and fighting some local creationists. On a regular basis, I write book reviews for the local newspaper, I work at the Skeptic News website, I write weekly web columns about reality TV shows such as Survivor, etc. And I am beginning to work on a new website where I can move some of my writing. Some of these I get paid for, some, alas, I don’t. When it comes to deciding what to drop, I have to weigh a lot of factors. Unfortunately, Teemings was the selection this time.
I still plan to read every issue and, who knows, I might even have time to write something for one of them! Patrick’s been the guiding hand behind all of this (or, in some cases, the hand pushing me to do some editing!), and he’s still around. So, with he and Troy, I know Teemings is in good hands.
See ya ‘round!
