Throughout the history of children’s television programming, the shows have exuded a sense of innocence. This concurs with the audience that they are catering to - children. Recently, however, one children’s show, namely Teletubbies, seems to have been doing something else, something less virtuous. The Bible, in the Book of Revelations, speaks of harbingers of doom known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. There is a very strong argument to be made that the Teletubbies are those very messengers from The Bible. There are many skeptics out there disputing the theory that the Teletubbies are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. These same people dismiss the Teletubbies as a show with harmless characters that is, “…an innovative, high quality entertainment programme for today's generation of pre-school children.” (“Time For Teletubbies-Press Release-Introduction”) It is therefore hard for them to see that the Teletubbies might have a hidden agenda of any kind, least of all the destruction of humankind. They just think of them as Dipsy, Laa-Laa, Tinky Winky, and Po, four characters of different colours for their children’s amusement. Their colours, however, is where the potential problem begins.
In ancient Rome, the chariot of the sun was pulled at the Roman games by four horses of different colours. This has a great deal of symbolic significance to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as the horsemen could be interpreted to represent the Sun’s energy riding upon the four elements of the earth which serves as a media for its expression. The Horsemen might not be horsemen at all, but some sort of light using the four elements. This might eliminate the Teletubbies from being the Four Horsemen if it were not for their very specific colours. Dipsy is green, Laa-Laa is yellow, Po is red, and Tinky Winky is purple, though a purple that is obviously predominantly blue. They correspond perfectly with the colours that represent the four elements. Earth is represented by green, air by yellow, fire by red, and water is represented by blue. The colours of the Teletubbies serves as a media for the expression of the Apocalypse.
The Teletubbies also provide other proof that they bring with them the Apocalypse. The Teletubbies all wear different symbols on their heads. These symbols, though seemingly just different random shapes, actually are rooted in Christian history. The circle that Po wears obviously represents, “…the circle of eternity;…” 1 Dipsy’s line apparently represents, “…staff of Christ's kingship;…” 1 It is also just as discernible that Tinky Winky’s triangle represents the trinity and Laa-Laa’s twisted line represents, “the flame of God's consuming presence;…” 1 One should remember that is was in the book of Revelations in the Christian Bible that the horsemen first appeared.
There is much more about the Teletubbies that is disturbing. The Teletubbies speak very differently from any adult. They seem to speak a language all their own. This is, however, very far from the truth, “The Teletubbies speak a play language which accurately mirrors the early speech of a one-year-old child.” (“Teletubbies-Background.”) The Teletubbies speak in a way so they can communicate with children and not adults. They speak in a code with which to brainwash children right under the noses of everyone. Thus they are successfully, and stealthily, taking out the base of our society, our children. It stands to reason that if you take out the base and the rest will crumble.
The Teletubbies also have the perfect weapon for completing their task. In the time of the Bible a horse was a powerful tool. It allowed a person to travel great distances and deliver important messages. This leaves one to wonder where the horses of the Teletubbies are. Simply, the “horses” of the Teletubbies are in their stomachs. It is television, something that is in all of their stomachs, that is the “horse” of today. Television, a tool for delivering messages across great distances without having to leave your place of origin. A tool that is superior to the horse. A tool of the year 2000, year of the supposed Apocalypse to many. The fact that the Teletubbies appeared just a few years before this is no coincidence. It is quite clear that their appearance is confirmation that 2000, or perhaps merely a few years later, will be the end of the world.
It is quite unmistakable that the Teletubbies are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Their colours match up with the elements that the Horsemen were believed to represent, the symbols on their heads also match up with Christian symbolism. The fact that the Teletubbies speak in a language only understood by children, further shows that they are harbingers of doom. They are taking out the base of society - the children. Their timing, near the millennium, further strengthens the argument. It appears that society’s only hope may be Noo-Noo, the vacuum cleaner that cleans up their messes.
