The morning of September 11 will be a day that lives in
our hearts, souls and minds for the rest of our lives. The members of the
Straight Dope Message Board came out and shared information when none other
was available.
The following narrative comes directly from the Straight
Dope Message Board.I have edited the comments and statements down, but hopefully
have left the meaning. I don’t care what anyone says, the members of
the SDMB have come together to mourn, pray and hope in the darkest of days.
Living Dead Girl I've just heard about this from
a friend, and I'm wondering if anyone has details - how bad it is, exactly
what happened, anything?
Johnny L.A. A second aircraft -- it looked like a
727 -- just crashed into the other tower!
Osiris The pictures are incredible, scary 2 planes,
both on fire must be terrorism but speculation

andygirl I'm watching the news right now. All they
know is pretty basic- one plane crashed into one tower, and then another
went into the other one. They hit the top floors. Both have massive holes
and at least one has a fire.
Arden Ranger CNN just said the plane was hijacked
and crashed into the tower. Didn't say which one but I'm guessing both.

even believe what I am seeing on the news. They said on NBC that they are
finding debris from the crash in Brooklyn, which I guess is several miles

And there are people still in the top of the building. They're landing people
on the roofs to rescue.

the air smoky. I saw the second collision, but too late to say anything about
the aircraft.

the places were hijacked, but they ARE saying it was terrorism.
Amp President Bush on TV just confirmed that it was
a terrorist attack.
Osiris It looks as though the fires are beginning
to go out.

Billdo vix works in 2 World Trade Center (the building
hit by the second plane).
Ukulele Ike I was on my rooftop in Brooklyn at 9:15.
The smoke was thick, and visible holes in the towers. Heavy smoke drifting
south as far as the eye could see.
Sealemon88 Oh, my God. The tops of both towers are
completely covered with smoke. It looks like two smokestacks. I just heard
that bodies are falling off the top floors....
Johnny L.A. This just in: Possible explosion at The
Pentagon.

Osiris There evacuating the White House, but may
just be a precaution.

in the country are being shut down.
Ruby ALL aircraft flying over the US has been ordered
to land at the nearest airport. Has that EVER happened before???

here in midtown were watching out the window and are now running around

John Corrado Confirmed explosion at the Pentagon,
in the Capitol. Fires on the Mall and at the Old Executive building.

was no explosion at the capitol.

in Arlington. I can hear distant sirens. I can hear helicopters. I swear
I heard an explosion. I do not feel safe. Our boss may evacuate the office.

has been locked down - according to one local radio station, both Navy bases

RalfCoder NPR reports that a section of the west
side of the Pentagon has completely collapsed. The section is 75-100 feet
wide, and apparently goes completely through from the outside to the courtyard
inside. It goes from the top completely to the ground.
Barbarian Every airport in North America has been
closed. There are no flights taking off today.
Icefalcon NY National Guard has been activated.
Nymysys 10,000 people in each tower during regular
business hours. 10,000 in each. 20,000 people. Mother of god.
atarian Canary Wharf, the tallest building in the
UK has been evacuated, almost certainly just as a precaution.
LifeOnWry American Airlines has confirmed that two
of the three planes involved were theirs - flight 11 from Boston to LA and
flight 77 from Dulles to LA. 11 is said to be the first one to hit WTC, 77
is the one reported to have hit the Pentagon. No word yet on the third plane.
Juniper200 The elementary school where my mom works
is locked down tightly as well. She says parents are calling every 30 seconds
to make sure the kids are safe and to see if they'll be sent home.
Soda They've evacuated the Swedish government as
well. Just to be on the safe side.

VA. All the area hospitals are swamped with injuries from the Pentagon.

all we have done is wake a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible vengeance"
xash building 7 in the WTC complex is on fire and
could collapse, says CNN. but i guess there's no risk of losing further lives
as i understand the area has been evacuated...

when Building 7 collapsed. Quote: "One of the problems with being a writer

JavaMaven1 CNN is reporting rockets landing in Kabul,
Afghanistan. Areas of the city on fire.
Padeye MSNBC reports the attack on Kabul isn't a
US action.
